Lodging: |
The San Juan Inn has an ideal location right above the river but the rooms could use renovating. The Desert Rose Inn in Bluff, UT (approx. 25 mi. NE of Mexican Hat) is lovely. |
Meals: |
River Rat Pizza has good burgers, etc., in spite of my first impression of their partially obstructed sign. They are very friendly people and sell beer, too. We were disappointed by the food at the San Juan Inn. |
Sightseeing: |
Visit the town's namesake, a 60' wide sombrero shaped rock and follow the San Juan river for a bit. Then see some of the truly beautiful places in the area including the Valley of the Gods & Gooseneck State Park . A short drive to Muley Point takes you to the Moki Dugway, an adventure unto itself. |
Good points: |
Lots to see and photograph. Decent dirt roads around Mexican Hat for some unpaved exploring. Not crowded when we were there in June. |
Bad points: |
Hot & dusty when we visited. |
Transportation: |
This is a tiny town with extremely limited services. W e drove there. |
Comments: |
Besides being a good location for a number of scenic outings this is the closest place to Monument Valley to purchase beer. |
